Estimating resin for a surface coat

Coating volume is based on surface area and the planned wet-film thickness. Measure the surface, select matching units, and enter the thickness specified for your coating product. A thicker coat uses more resin even when the surface area stays the same.

For example, a 600 cm² surface with a 3 mm coat uses about 180 mL before an allowance: 600 cm² multiplied by 0.3 cm equals 180 cm³, and 1 cm³ equals 1 mL. That example assumes a flat, rectangular surface and a uniform coat.

Edges, drips, uneven surfaces, and porous materials can change the amount used. Follow the resin maker's stated coating depth and application instructions.

Coating Calculator

Estimate the resin volume needed for a flat surface by entering its dimensions, the planned coating thickness, and an allowance. Use the thickness permitted for your exact coating product.

How to use the coating calculator

  1. Choose a rectangular or round surface.
  2. Enter the surface dimensions and measurement unit.
  3. Enter the coat thickness in millimeters.
  4. Set resin density and a waste allowance if you need a weight estimate.
  5. Read the surface area and resin volume results.

How the estimate works

For a flat rectangular surface, volume equals length multiplied by width multiplied by coat thickness. Keep the units consistent before converting the result to milliliters. A thicker coating uses more resin even when the surface area stays the same.

Edges, drips, porous material, surface texture, and uneven application can change the amount consumed. Follow the coating product's instructions for application thickness and coverage.
